TOURISM
About Lisbon
Lisbon is a fascinating tourist destination that combines history, culture and an energizing atmosphere! The Portuguese capital has a rich cultural and historical heritage, acquired over the ages, that still enchants visitors today.
Founded with the name Alis Ubbo by the Phoenicians, which means safe harbor, the city was shortly after conquered by the Greeks and Carthaginians, becoming the capital of Roman Lusitania and acquired the name Olissipo, the origin of the evolution to the current name.
Lisbon’s history is marked by several periods of influence, from the Roman and Moorish invasion to the Age of Discovery, a period in which Portugal led the maritime expansion and discovered new paths and territories.
Its historical heritage is reflected in several iconic monuments. A symbol of the Age of Discovery is the Belém Tower, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal, together with the Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of 15th-century Manueline architecture.
The city’s architecture, especially that of Lisbon’s city center, is also a landmark in the capital’s history. After the earthquake of 1755 that devastated much of the city, Lisbon underwent a methodical reconstruction, planned by the Marquis of Pombal, which gave rise to perpendicular and parallel streets.
Situated on the banks of the River Tagus, Lisbon is known for its lively and welcoming atmosphere, as well as its privileged location and stunning views. Traditional neighborhoods such as Alfama, Bairro Alto and Mouraria exude an authentic elegance with their narrow streets, colorful houses and traditional taverns where you can enjoy Fado sessions.
Food markets, such as Mercado da Ribeira, are true gastronomic treasures where you can sample a variety of local delicacies.
Lisbon is also a great starting point for exploring the surrounding region. From here, you can take stunning trips to nearby places such as Sintra, with its charming palaces, and Cascais, a pleasant seaside village.
Whether for its rich history, vibrant culture, delicious cuisine or architectural beauty, Lisbon is a tourist destination that offers a unique and unforgettable experience to all who visit.
